Listed below are the answers to the most frequently asked
questions regarding living on campus in the summer. Please
plan your travel/flight plans according to the information below.
Exceptions will not be granted based upon travel conflicts except in
rare instances.
What do I need to do to live on campus this summer?
First, you must be in the paid employment of a Colby
department. You must fill out the necessary employment paperwork
through the Human Resources personnel office in Roberts or via the Human Resources Website. Applications for summer housing are due in the Special Programs office
by Tuesday, May 1. Late applicants are not guaranteed summer housing
since space is limited this year. Incomplete applications will not be
processed until missing information is provided.
Where will I live this summer?
Summer student workers will live in Goddard-Hodgkins, Treworgy and Grossman along with the Mary Low Co-op.
When does housing begin and end?
Summer housing is available from Monday May 26 until Sunday August 17
but if you are planning to remain on campus until August 17. Class of 2008 graduates may not remain on
campus beyond August 11, 2008.
How much does it cost to live on campus?
It costs $58 per week including a 14 meal plan. (Please read more
information below about the meal plan)
I want to cook my own meals and only pay for the room. Is
this possible?
No. The $58 per week price is all inclusive and there is
not an option to pay for only the room since the $58 charge only covers
a portion of the actual cost to the college. The rest of your room and
board fee is subsidized by summer programs.
I want access to kitchen facilities this summer.
The Mary Low co-op kitchen will be made available this summer provided
that it is kept clean.
Do I have to stay the whole summer?
Yes, Once you decide to live on campus, you must stay for the whole
summer! Ok, just kidding. You can stay as long as you like during the
summer employment period of May 28-August 15. Simply specify the dates on the housing form.
You cannot live on campus sooner than 48 before your job begins or for
longer than 48 hours after your employment ends.
I got a job off campus. Can I still live on campus?
Because of limited space, housing is available only to
those working on campus. Exceptions to this policy will be granted in
extremely rare instances.
I am living off campus this summer. Can I eat in the
dining hall?
Yes, You can purchase meals through the line. The
student rate is $4 for breakfast, $6 for lunch and $8 for dinner. If
you have a campus job, You can choose to purchase a 14-meal plan for
$58 per week which would be deducted from your paycheck. I you do not have a cmapus job the amount can be added to your bill through SFS. Unfortunately there is not an option to purcahse a meal plan for partial weeks. You can purchase a meal plan for anywhere from 2 weeks to the full 12 weeks of the summer but may not pick and choose weeks as they must be consecutive.
How soon can I move into my Summer room?
You can move into your summer room theoretically as early as May 19 IF
your room is unoccupied and cleaned. The vast majority
of rooms will not be ready until May 23 or later. A list will be
published on the web and updated at least twice daily showing which
rooms are ready to be occupied (You will be notified of the link
later). Some rooms will not be ready until May 26 or 27 because they
are occupied by seniors, hall staff, etc.
Can you please explain what the meal plan is like?
Between commencement (May 25) and June 15 a modified meal plan will be
available. Basically, a continental style breakfast will be available
Monday-Friday and a modest dinner will also be available Monday-Friday.
One meal per weekend day will be provided in the form of takeout from
an area restaurant (Big G's, Pad Thai, Pizza, etc.). So basically a 12
meal plan is offered from May 26-June 10. The dining hall opens for the
summer on Sunday June 15 with dinner. You will be notified each week of
the dining hall schedule. There will be a few regular dining hall meals available over Reunion weekend and over the weekend of June 13. The HR will keep you posted as to what meals will be available.
What else should I know about the dining hall?
No meals in the spa or dining hall will be available on
Monday May 26 on Monday June 9. Arrangements will be made through the HR for one
take-out meal for dinner on each of those two days.
Also, the dinner meal that will be served from Tuesday May 27 to Sunday
June 15 will consist of a limited menu. The typical choices you have
available during the school year will not be available during this
interim period. Beginning on June 15, you will see the normal dining
hall variety although not quite as varied as during the school year.
Why?
The dining hall schedule is dictated in large part by
the number of outside groups that are here on campus. When enough
people are here to make it economically feasible to do so, the dining
hall is open for three meals per day. At other times it is open for
less than three meals per day or even closed some days especially
Saturdays. The $58 in room and board that you pay actually covers only
slightly less than half of what it costs the college to provide it. The
revenue generated from summer camps and conferences covers the rest. We
try to keep the cost reasonable so that you can earn money over the
summer while at the same time the College can keep costs reasonable. We
understand that you are here to work and do research and the value of
that cannot be underestimated. During the interim period between
commencement and the start of summer operations, we try to provide you
with a modest yet nutritious selection of food.
I currently live in the in one of the mentioned Roberts Row dorms. Can I stay in my
current room for the summer.
Generally speaking, yes but arrangements will need to be made by PPD to
clean your room sometime to get it ready for the Fall. In rare
instances because of maintenance or repair needs, you might have to
move.
I am living in the one of the assigned Roberts Row dorms this Fall. Can I live in
my Fall room this summer.
Generally Speaking, yes. If your fall room is a double or larger, you
probably will end up with a roommate though.
I want to live in a single room.
Almost everyone wants a single. Any singles will be awarded based upon
the following priority. Graduating Seniors (class of '08) will get a
single IF they will be on campus for entire summer. Remaining singles
are awarded based upon the number of summer worked on campus. If this
is your first summer living on campus and you are not a graduating
senior, Please put down a roommate preference. Wanting a single because
you value peace and quiet or because you need to concentrate on your
research is NOT sufficient reason to get one.
I don't want some of the furniture in my room. Will
PPD move it?
NO! During the summer, PPD does not offer this service. All
furniture in your room must remain there for the entire summer. Please
do not store it in the hallway or in a lounge. Severe fines may be
levied against those who violate this rule and your ability to live on
campus will be jeopardized.
Will Chem free housing be available?
Yes, Chem free housing will be provided.
What is my mailing address in the Summer and where do I pick up my mail?
You can continue to use your same mailbox number as during the school year. Mail pickup is in the Eustis mailroom.
When can I move into my Fall room?
IF your room is cleaned and relleased by PPD, you can move your belongings into your Fall room as early as August 15 but cannot live in your Fall room until August 17 when the HR's return. You must be out of your summer room by
August 18 at the latest. Please do not book airline flights based upon an assumption
that your room will be ready before August 15.
I am leaving before May 19. Can I just store my stuff
in my summer room until I come back after commencement?
No. You will need to make arrangements to store your belongings until
you return. If you plan to return to campus on Monday May 26, it might
be possible to leave your belongings in your school year room. A
request for exception form needs to be submitted. Forms are available
in the Special Programs office in Eustis. Deadline for submission is
May 2, 2008.
I am leaving before August 15th. Can I just store my
stuff in my school year room until I return when classes begin?
No. You will need to make arrangements to store your belongings until
you return. Exceptions to this rule will be granted only for
extenuating circumstances. You must submit a request for exception
form, available in the Special Programs office. The decision will be
made by a committee and you will be notified of the decision. Deadline
for submission is Aug. 1, 2008.

I am going home for a week this summer. Will I be
charged $58 for that week?
Yes. As long as your belongings are in the room, you are considered an
occupant of that room.
When will I find out where I will be living this
summer?
Summer Housing assignments will be completed by Wednesday May 14th. An
email notification will be sent that day.

Are there any ways to avoid paying for room and board.
Yes. Find one of the few jobs that include room and
board as part of your compensation. Those jobs include some grant
funded research positions, tour guides, Special Programs employees and
perhaps a couple other jobs. A list of all jobs will be posted before
Spring break.
The HR and three Assistant HR's also receive free room
and board. The HR is a full time employee of Special Programs but the
assistant HR's work for other departments and perform limited
duties in exchange for room and board. Those duties include being
available May 25-27 and the weekend of August 15 to help
with check in and check out respectively. Also, the HR's help
enforce rules in the summer and provide general information to the rest
