The Safety Office is charged with ensuring that all members of the Colby
community - students, faculty, staff, contractors, and visitors - live, work,
and play in a hazard free environment.
The Director of Safety is responsible for several distinct categories of
regulatory compliance and risk management:
Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) - Compliance with federal OSHA regulations involves training and awareness building among employees and contractors who are covered by more than 1,500 safety regulations. Included are such things as confined space entry, hazard communication, laboratory safety, lockout/ tagout, bloodborne pathogens, and many more.
Fire and Life Safety - Along with members of the Physical Plant Department and
others, the safety office coordinates compliance with local and state fire
protection and life safety statutes, including the National Fire Protection
Association's Life Safety Code (NFPA 101), and various local and state fire
protection codes. The Safety Office works closely with the Waterville Fire
Department in all aspects of fire safety on campus and provides training to
employees, hall staff, and students in all manner of fire safety.
Environmental Compliance - The College's environmental compliance efforts,
including hazardous waste storage and disposal, emissions monitoring, chemical
spill response and planning, training, and reporting, are all part of the
duties of the Safety Director. The College's new Integrated Contingency Plan
(ICP), filed with local and state regulators, details our compliance programs
and sets the tone for Colby's strong commitment to environmental stewardship.
Radiation Safety - The Director of Safety is the College's Radiation Safety
Officer (RSO). Duties include chairing the Radiation Safety Committee,
performing periodic audits and updates of the license and radiation safety
program, and staying abreast of regulatory changes. Although the amount of
radioisotopes on campus are small, commitment to proper management, usage, and
disposal of radioactive materials is very strong.
Employee Wellness and Injury Prevention and Management - The Safety Office
provides employees with regular CPR/1st Aid classes, training in proper lifting
techniques, advice on office and workplace ergonomics, and more. The commitment
to employee health extends beyond the workplace with a return-to-work program
for injuries and illnesses whether work related or not.
