Colby Wind and Jazz Ensembles Present Spring Concerts

The Colby College Wind Ensemble and the Colby Jazz Ensemble will both present spring concerts in April in Colby's Lorimer Chapel on the Waterville campus. The Colby Wind Ensemble will perform "Rites and Passages" at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, April 13. The Colby Jazz Ensemble will present "Toot Sweet Suites" at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, April 20. Eric Thomas will direct both concerts, which are part of the 2001-02 Music at Colby concert series and free of charge.

On April 13, the Colby Wind Ensemble will perform musical works examining death, transfigurations and ascension. Pieces will include "Kaddish," the Judaic prayer for the dead by W. Francis McBeth, "March from the Symphonic Metamorphosis" by Paul Hindemith, "with brightness round about it" from the book of Ezekiel by Nancy Galbraith, "Death and Transfiguration" by Richard Strauss, "The Ascension" by Robert Smith and "Fantasia" by Vaclav Nelhybel. The concert will also feature trumpeter Andrew Keiser '02 performing "Concerto for Trumpet" by Alexander Arutiunian.

On April 20, the Colby Jazz Ensemble will perform a diverse selection of jazz works. The concert will include selections from Ellington, Sandoval, Harold Arlen, Quincy Jones, Benny Goodman, Matt Harris and a suite by Mike Pendowski. The program will range in jazz stylings from classic swing to hip hop, blues, funk, shuffle and Latin. Hillary Bouchard '02, Mark Buschenfeldt '02, Zach Hansen'02 and Andy Keiser '02 will perform solos.
