51st Annual Colby Institute for Leadership is March 26

On Tuesday, March 26, Colby College will offer its 51st annual program for leaders in the Maine workplace--the 2002 Colby Institute for Leadership. This year's theme is "Filling the Void: New Strategies for Leadership." Keynote speakers are Michael Useem, Egan Professor of Management and Director for Leadership and Change Management at the University of Pennsylvania's Wharton School, and Richard Florida, H. John Heinz III Professor of Economic Development at Carnegie Mellon University's Heinz School of Public Policy and Management.

The program runs from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Colby's campus in Waterville. Participants must register in advance to attend the institute. For information, businesses or individuals should contact Colby’s Office of Special Programs at 207-872-3386 or visit their Web site at www.colby.edu/spec.prog. Online registration is available. Registration, lunch and an afternoon reception are included in the $175 fee, and four or more participants from the same organization are eligible for a group discount.

At 9 a.m. Michael Useem will present "Learning from Leadership Moments: Enduring Lessons from Leadership on the Line." Drawing on moments when managers faced difficult decisions, Useem will discuss the qualities and actions that make a difference when leadership really matters.

At 10:30 a.m. participants may attend workshops on time management, coaching for high performance, authenticity in leadership, collaborative leadership, personal qualities of leadership, and technology at the strategic planning table.

At noon Governor Angus King will present the 2002 Governor's Awards for Business Excellence to Maine companies that have demonstrated a consistently high level of commitment to their community, to their employees and to manufacturing or service excellence.

At 2 p.m. Richard Florida will present "Leadership in a Knowledge-Based Economy." Florida will discuss what a knowledge-based economy is and what roles people, talent, resources and geography play in such an economy.

At 3:15 p.m. a reception will be held in the lobby of the Colby College Museum of Art. Currently on exhibit at the museum is the Joan Whitney Payson Collection, a collection of 26 works by world-famous Impressionist and Post-Impressionist artists, including Ingres, Monet and Renoir.
