Colby Food Drive to Collect 500 Pounds of Food Colby College's Dining Services is currently collecting donations for their annual food drive and expects to reach their goal of 500 pounds of food for the Salvation Army of Waterville by Friday, December 14. More than 400 pounds had been collected a week before the deadline. "This is coming at a very good time for us," said Sharon Harford, captain of the Waterville Salvation Army. "Colby does a marvelous job." The Salvation Army will use the donation towards the Christmas baskets they prepare for 325 area families. Dining services has been collecting canned or non-perishable food from Colby students, faculty and staff since mid-November. Last year Colby collected 275 pounds of food and donated $300 worth of perishable food, in addition to cash. The Colby program is part of the food service Sodexho’s national Caring Cans program designed to encourage donations of non-perishable food items on college campuses. Last year the nationwide Caring Cans program collected 332,000 pounds of food for local charities. |
