self-directed study

<<less commonly taught languages :: self directed study>>

With the cooperation of the Dean of Faculty and the Registrar, the LRC and the language faculty are proud to offer for-credit, self-directed, tutored, introductory study of languages not taught as part of the regular curriculum. Through this program, in 2003 and 2004 students have taken Polish and Arabic. Before the formalization of this program, students have studied Swahili, Haitian Creole, and Arabic.

resources: Arabic | Polish

Program Requirements

The course is two credits pass/fail, for an individual student or small group of students in the Fall or Spring semester (not JanPlan). We can offer the course for 1-4 students, with prior approval from the Dean of Faculty, the designated faculty sponsor in the foreign languages, and the director of the LRC.

Students must fill out and submit an application form before the end of the all-college course selection period for the following semester.

Credit is dependent on a successful oral exam administered by an outside evaluator (not the tutor). In the event of more than two unexcused absences, the student will be withdrawn from the course, at the discretion of the faculty sponsor.
