She has taught Chinese language and literature at both Berkeley and the University of Minnesota, and is currently Associate Professor in the Department of East Asian Studies. Her research interests center on traditional Chinese fiction and drama, and gender construction in pre-modern China. She has published articles related to these topics in Ming Studies, CHINOPERL Papers, Journal of Sung-Yuan Studies, and Journal of the Economic and Social History of the Orient. In 1996 she was a Visiting Scholar at the Center for Chinese Studies, Taipei, Taiwan. Professor Besio teaches courses in Chinese language and Chinese literature in translation.
