Sodexho,
Colby's food service contractor, makes feeding the hungry a corporate
priority. They encourage all accounts to make arrangements with
local food banks to receive unexpected overproduction due to last-minute
count changes or function cancellations and make a point of rewarding
outstanding individual efforts.
Sodexho sets
aside the month of April as a special challenge for all accounts
to organize a team effort to fight hunger in their local communities.
Since 2003, our management team has joined with our other
Maine accounts and the Colby Volunteer Center each spring to organize, prepare, and serve a B-B-Q to 250 children who participate in the Colby mentoring program for disadvantaged youths, "Colby Cares About Kids".
In a special
holiday effort, Dining Services, together with the Colby student
volunteers, spearhead an annual food drive every December.
This effort is part of Sodexho's national "Caring Cans" program
designed to encourage donations of non-perishable food items on
college campuses. Each year, this national program collects over 300,000
lbs. of food for local charities.
Each November,
Dining Services works with the Colby's Newman Council to coordinate
the annual student fast to raise funds for a local shelter. Colby
students are given the opportunity to donate their dinner meal.
That meal is then removed from the board plan and the corresponding
funds are donated to the Mid-Maine Homeless Shelter. On average,
800 students participate each year.
