Election Guidelines

Taken from Article VI of the Constitution of the Colby Student Government

  1. General Rules

    1. The incumbent SGA Parliamentarian is responsible for coordinating all elections and scheduling all election events. If the incumbent SGA Parliamentarian is seeking any SGA office in the election, the incumbent SGA President and Vice President will select an alternate Election Coordinator who is not seeking an office for the following year.
    2. Any regular elections occurring in the spring must be finished by two weeks prior to room draw. Any regular elections occurring in the fall must begin by the third week of classes.
    3. Campaigning must not begin before the date and time designated by the incumbent Parliamentarian or Election Coordinator and may continue throughout the voting period.
    4. For any SGA election the only indoor spaces to be used for campaigning are: residence halls, Pulver Pavilion, the athletic center, the Street and the adjoining computer labs and study rooms, Roberts, Foss and Dana dining halls, and the bulletin boards immediately surrounding these dining halls.  Additionally, neither negative campaigning, nor candidates coercing students to vote for them (e.g. standing behind students while they are voting or forcing a laptop on students and asking them to vote) is permitted.  Candidates are allowed to inform students of the logistics of the election (the times that the ballots will be active, where they can find the ballot online, the runoff process, etc.) and encourage them to vote, as long as they are not coercing students to vote for them.  The violation of any of the above mentioned rules would result in automatic disqualification from the election.
    5. All voting must occur online and the voting window must be 48 hours. In order to win any election a candidate must have a majority of the votes cast. In the event that no candidate wins a majority in an election a run-off will take place between the two tickets with the most votes.
    6. There must always be a write-in option in the initial voting round but never in the run-off.
    7. All campaign expenditure receipts must be turned in to the incumbent SGA Parliamentarian or the Election Coordinator. Campaign expenditures do not get reimbursed.
    8. The format of the debate is up to the discretion of the incumbent SGA Parliamentarian of Election Coordinator.
    9. There is no limit to the number of 8.5” by 11” or smaller posters that can be used in any SGA election, but any paper campaign materials that are posted must be posted on a bulletin board.
    10. All campaigning in person is allowed. All candidate may urge students to vote, tell them the website of where to vote, but cannot physically show them the website as that would be in violation of rule 4.
    11. Writing on students’ dorm room white boards with dry erase markers is allowed.
    12. For the purposes of SGA elections, apparel is defined as anything which is worn on the body.  For dorm presidents using campaign apparel, the apparel may be worn outside the 50' radius.
  2. President and Vice President Elections

    1. The SGA President and Vice President will run as a joint ticket. Each ticket will be able to put up 5 22” by 28” posters, two full sheet sized banners, write a platform to be published in the Echo during election week, create a 5 minute video to be shown in Pulver during election week, use all threads of the General Announcements, create a campaign website, create a facebook group, chalk with the prior approval of the Office of Campus Life, wear and distribute campaign apparel (such as T-shirts), and participate in a formal debate.
