Sigrid Tompkins '38, a pioneer for women in the legal profession, was a dedicated supporter of Colby and the first woman to serve as a member of the Board of Trustees Executive Committee. She died on February 15, 2005, at the age of 88. With a bequest, Sigrid established the Nathaniel and Ragnhild I. Tompkins Memorial Fund, an unrestricted scholarship fund in memory of her parents.
The first woman partner of a Maine law firm, Tompkins practiced at Pierce Atwood in Portland until her retirement in 2000. Elected vice president of the Cumberland County Bar Association in 1973, she was the first woman officer in its history and became president of the association the following year.
Born in Houlton, Maine, to two Colby alums -- Nathaniel Tompkins 1903 and Ragnhild Iverson Tompkins 1908 -- Tompkins majored in economics. She was a member of Sigma Kappa sorority, the Debating Club (she won the Coburn Speaking Prize and the Murray Debating Prize), and the White Mule board.
She earned her law degree from Boston University in 1941 and was admitted to the Maine Bar Association in 1942. For three years she practiced law with her father, a lawyer and legislator who was appointed to both the Maine Superior and Maine Supreme Courts and served as the president of the Maine Senate. In 1945 Sigrid was recruited to join the Portland law firm then known as Hutchinson, Pierce, Atwood & Scribner, where she practiced in the areas of probate, trusts, estate planning, and estate administration. In 1976 she received a Colby Brick Award.
In addition to her extraordinary legacy of professional achievement and personal commitment to civic responsibility, Tompkins leaves a legacy of opportunity for Colby students who need financial assistance to attend her beloved alma mater.

Recently, the Pulver Family Foundation made the naming gift for the Pulver Pavilion, an 8,000 square-foot space that will bridge the two existing wings of Cotter Union. The Pulver Pavilion, a large, open space with high barrel vaulted ceilings, will include a café, snack bar, and lounge area.
