undefinedTeaching lies at the heart of Colby. The College strives to attract and retain a superior faculty whose teaching and scholarship will make an impact on Colby students, the community, the region, and the world. Reaching the World: A Campaign for Colby seeks to raise $25 million for faculty chairs, including 10 new faculty positions, to enhance Colby's academic profile and strengthen areas of existing interdisciplinary activity.

Endowed chairs strengthen faculty leadership by providing resources for compensation as well as annual research funds to enhance scholarly activities and classroom teaching. In consultation with the College, donors may express a preference for the chairholder's academic discipline. Colby's president appoints all endowed chairholders. Donors receive annual reports about the teaching and research of their chairholder. Three levels of endowed faculty chair opportunities are available.
Endowment Opportunities
Term Chair for Junior Faculty Members - $500,000
The key to Colby’s continued intellectual vitality is a steady infusion of talented young scholars with a passion for teaching. Term chairs provide resources to partially support an assistant professor. When the term chair is promoted or leaves Colby, a new chairholder will be appointed. After the chair is first funded and filled, term chair donors are invited to campus to meet the chairholder.

Endowed Faculty Chair for a Current Senior Faculty Member - $1.25 million
This type of endowed chair provides resources to support a current faculty member in an established department or discipline. In some instances a donor may have the opportunity to create a renewable term chair, which provides flexibility with regard to the future assignment of the chair. After the chair is first funded and filled, the College hosts an inaugural lecture on campus in honor of the donor and his or her family.

Endowed Faculty Chair for a New Academic Initiative - $2.5 million
To expand and enhance the College’s curricular offerings, the strategic Plan For Colby calls for the addition of 10 new faculty chair positions over the course of the decade. This type of endowed chair allows Colby to create a new academic area or to augment an existing area by adding a position to the faculty. After the chair is first funded and filled, the College hosts an inaugural lecture on campus in honor of the donor and his or her family.
