Campus Beautification
This garden on the walkway in front of Charles A. Dana Hall is completely new this year. An exceptionally cool and rainy spring and early summer really helped the day lilies and hostas get established. These plants were chosen for their winter hardiness and low maintenance requirements. |
On the quad, by the pond, and in front of residence halls, 31 benches provide pleasant places to study outdoors, chat with friends and visitors, or just have lunch and enjoy the scenery. These concrete-form benches were installed 30 years ago and will be replaced gradually over the next few years. |
The College has installed ten new benches with six more scheduled for delivery this year. The old benches sit on gravel beds. The new benches are placed on bricks recycled from the redesigned Roberts Union courtyard. The brick bases are not only more attractive but they also eliminate the problem of gravel being kicked out over the lawns. |
Three backflow prevention boxes—one each at the lacrosse, soccer, and baseball fields—help implement Colby’s commitment to environmentally safe landscaping design. They prevent contamination of water mains from the run-off of fertilizer and debris from the fields. Each backflow box is surrounded by plantings to camouflage its hard-edged shape. |
