After graduating from Colby, Whitney Dayton ’01 took up running, eventually participating in the Los Angeles Marathon and several half marathons. "Colby instilled in me the importance of a balanced life—one that includes socializing, working, and physical activity," said Whitney. "Maintaining that balance post-college proved to be challenging, but is imperative to leading a healthy life."
"Colby represents the time in my life when I became comfortable and confident in my own skin," she said. "Once I found my niche, it was a community that offered countless opportunities." Whitney was captain of the varsity squash team for two years, was a junior class officer, served as the SGA secretary, and was a member of the Judicial Board. As an alumna, she still finds ways to stay involved with Colby, serving on the gift committee for her fifth reunion and interviewing prospective students as an admissions volunteer.
Having grown up in Texas, Whitney returned there after Colby to thaw out after four Maine winters and to work in Texas politics as a campaign fund raiser. Three years later, though, she was back in New England, working in the development office at the Taft School in Watertown, Connecticut (her alma mater). Recently engaged to Christian Brunet '01, Whitney continues to work at Taft as a major gifts fund raiser, a job that takes her around the country raising capital funds from Taft constituents. "I come from a very close family," said Whitney. "My parents and grandparents instilled in me at a very early age the importance of philanthropy—I guess I was destined for a career in fund raising!"
In fact she considers the greatest lesson her parents taught her to be that philanthropy provides a strong sense of purpose in one's life. She has donated $500 each the past five years to Colby's Alumni Fund. "I feel grateful for the experience and want to ensure Colby offers the same, if not more, opportunities to its future students," she said.
