Over the past several years, Colby has had tremendous success with its postdoctoral teaching-research fellow program, primarily in the sciences. Talented young scholars recently out of graduate school bring with them fresh insights, new techniques, innovative ideas, and ambitious research agendas, and they have helped incorporate significant project-based learning opportunities into Colby's curriculum.

Now The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation has awarded Colby a $1.4-million grant to extend its teaching-research fellows program to a range of departments and programs in the humanities, social sciences, and interdisciplinary studies over the next four years. Each of these positions will be the first of its kind in its designated discipline.

The grant provides for six postdoctoral teaching-research fellows with two-year appointments, during which the fellows will teach two classes each year, work with senior faculty mentors to advance their teaching and research, and work closely with students.

In addition to the postdoctoral fellows program, the grant will help bridge retiring senior faculty with new tenure-track faculty by allowing outgoing and incoming faculty to work together over a two-year transitional period.

The Mellon grant will make it possible for Colby to build on its successes and maintain enhancements to teaching and learning that have been made in recent years.
