Women's lacrosse ready for NCAA game
WATERVILLE, Maine --- The Colby College women's lacrosse team, fresh off an emotional weekend after winning the program's first-New England Small College Athletic Conference title, will begin NCAA Division III Tournament play on Wednesday with an opening round home game with Eastern Connecticut State at 4:30 p.m. at Bill Alfond Field.
Ticket prices are $3 for adults and $2 for students. There is no pre-sale for the event and tickets will be sold at the field starting at 3:30 p.m. The winner of Wednesday's game will play at Hamilton College at 11:30 a.m. in a regional semifinal Saturday. The time start for that regional semifinal is new. The Mules (12-5) head to the NCAA tourney for the second time in program history. Colby beat Plymouth State in an opening round home game in 2006 and then fell to Bowdoin College in a regional semifinal. Eastern Connecticut (11-6), the champions of the Little East Conference, competes in its third NCAA tourney. The Warriors are 1-2 in two previous NCAA tournaments. They lost an opening-round match to Montclair State in last year's tourney after winning a first-round match against Springfield College in 2005 prior to being eliminated by Salisbury University in the second round that season. Colby has met Eastern Connecticut once, the Mules winning by a 16-9 score last March in Orlando, Florida. Kate Sheridan (Hingham, Mass.), Colby's two-time All-American junior midfielder, leads the NESCAC with 51 goals and 31 assists for 82 points. She also has a team-best 67 draw controls and 29 ground balls. Sheridan reached 200 career points in Sunday's title game and has 140 goals and 60 assists. Junior attacker Becky Julian (South Windsor, Conn.) has been named the NESCAC Player of the Week three times this season. She just set a NESCAC tournament record with 17 points (11 goals, 6 assists). Julian ranks third in the NESCAC in points per game (4.13) with 44 goals and 18 assists for 62 points. Julian helped the Colby women's ice hockey team make the NESCAC title game. Sophomore attacker Amy Campbell (North Andover, Mass.) and Julian tied a NESCAC tournament record for goals with 11 each. Campbell, who had five goals as a first-year player while playing behind some veteran players, has 39 goals and nine assists for 48 points this season. She had six goals in the NESCAC quarterfinal win over Tufts University and added four more in Colby's 10-8 upset win over Middlebury in a semifinal game. Heather Nickerson (Falmouth, Mass.), another women's ice hockey player, is fourth in scoring for Colby with 22 goals and six assists for 28 points. Lauren Strazzula (Norwell, Mass.) has 11 goals and 14 assists, while Kathleen Kramer (Norwell, Mass.) has 19 goals and six assists. Senior co-captains Carrie Lovejoy (Old Greenwich, Conn.) and Jamie Enos (South Hamilton, Mass.) have each played major roles for the team. Lovejoy had three goals in the two wins over Middlebury and Trinity this past weekend. Meanwhile, Enos is the veteran leader of a young defense and leads the team with 24 caused turnovers and 31 ground balls. Colby first-year goalie Sarah Warnke (Lakeville, Conn.) has a 9-2 record and ranks third in the NESCAC in goals against average at 9.08. Eastern Connecticut senior attacker Lily Anderson (Portland, Maine) leads the way with 52 goals. Senior captain and midfielder Megan Gloster (Agawam, Mass.) leads the club in points (60) and junior goalie Joslin Wells (Marstons Mills, Mass.) has played every minute in net. With team-highs in ground balls (62), draw controls (62) and caused turnovers (35), sophomore midfielder Taylor MacDonald (Oak Bluffs, Mass.) is a force in all aspects of the game. MacDonald, who also has 20 goals and 19 assists, was named MVP of the Little East Conference Tournament.
