Aigler, Smith, King make academic squad
WATERVILLE, Maine --- Colby College track and field athletes Brent Aigler (Medfield, Mass.), Kyle Smith (Seattle, Wash.), and Anna King (Greenland, N.H.) were each named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District 1 Track and Field second team on Thursday.
Aigler and Smith made the men's second team, while King was on the women's second team. District 1 is made up of Division II and III colleges from New York and New England. All three seniors just graduated from Colby in late May. Aigler, a Phi Beta Kappa honoree, won Colby's Kim Miller Award --- given to a junior who exemplified devotion to College, loyalty to family, and respect for the country. He earned Colby's Excellence in Geology Award and also was a Dana Scholar winner for excellence in academics and student leadership. An Eagle scout, Aigler was a head resident for much of his time at Colby. He ran the 200 meters and did jumps for the men's track and field team. Smith, an 800 meter runner for the indoor and outdoor teams, also was a Phi Beta Kappa honoree. He earned Colby's' Laurie Peterson Prize as the top junior government major. Smith was a research and teacher's assistant in Colby's economics department and already has a job with Charles River Associates, an economics consulting firm. Aigler and Smith were both on the NESCAC Winter and Spring All-Academic Teams for the past two years. King recently finished in second place in the 3,000-meter steeplechase at the NCAA Division III Outdoor Track and Field Championships. She earned four All-American honors in her four years at Colby and was the 2008 Open New England champion in the steeplechase. King, a sociology major, also won NESCAC titles in the steeplechase the past two years and was the title winner in the 1,500 meters at the New England Division III meet. King also helped the cross country team to fifth-place finishes in 2005 and 2006. King, who will head to Dartmouth this fall to get her master's degree, earned Colby's Bither Award for academics, leadership, and athletics. She was the only Colby athlete this spring and one of just 10 NESCAC spring athletes to earn league all-conference, all-sportsmanship, and all-academic honors. |
