Swimmer Smith earns District 1 academic award
WATERVILLE, Maine --- Colby College men's swimmer Kevin Smith (Westfield, N.J.), who holds three school records, was named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District 1 At-Large second team on Tuesday.
District 1 encompasses all Division II and III colleges in New York and New England. The At-Large group consists of sports such as ice hockey, field hockey, women's crew, swimming, wrestling, lacrosse, water polo, tennis, rifle, skiing, gymnastics, golf, women's bowling, men's volleyball, and fencing. Smith, a philosophy major who will be a junior this fall, holds Colby records in the 500-yard freestyle (4:38.89), 1,000 freestyle (9:47.12), and the 1,650 freestyle (16:17.08). He broke 16-year-old records in all three events. Smith finished in fourth place in both the 1,000 and 1,650 freestyle races at the New England Small College Athletic Conference Championships. Smith was the men's swim team selection on the NESCAC Winter All-Sportsmanship Team. He earned Colby's Academic Leadership Award in 2008 and was a head resident during the 2007-08 academic year. Smith was one of four student-athletes from NESCAC to make the At-Large squad.
