Pitching lifts softball to two more victories
WATERVILLE, Maine --- Colby College's Brittany Tasi (Shelton, Conn.) and Alyssa Crowell (Gilford, N.H.) each did not allow an earned run in complete game pitching performances in 6-2 and 10-1 non-conference softball victories over University of Maine at Presque Isle on Friday at Crafts Field.
The Mules (16-13) took four games over two days against UMPI (5-20). Colby closes out the season with a doubleheader at home Saturday against St. Joseph's College. Tasi allowed two unearned runs over seven innings in the first game to improve to 4-4 this season. Crowell allowed a single in the first inning of a five-inning game shortened because of the eight-run rule. Colby first-year slugger Alex Essman (Littleton, Mass.) went 5-for-6 with four RBI and three runs scored in the two games. Essman hit her ninth home run of the season in the second game. After an error and a walk in the first inning, Essman smacked a three-run homer to put Colby up for good. She also had a walk and a single in that second game. The Mules also got ahead quickly with four runs in the first inning of the first game. Carlie Minichino (Stratford, Conn.) had a two-run double and Essman followed her with an RBI double.
