Varsity crews third, novice fours earn wins

LEWISTON, Maine --- The Colby College varsity crews each took thirds and the Mules received wins from two novice four crews at the President's Cup rowing event on the Androscoggin River on Sunday with rivals Bates College and Bowdoin College.

The men's varsity eight had a time of 6:04.71 over 1,500 meters to finish behind Bates (5:44.84) and Bowdoin (6:03.71). Meanwhile, the Bates women's varsity eight also won in 6:50.98 and were followed in by Bowdoin (7:16.11) and Colby (7:21.94).

Colby's men's novice four had a winning time of 7:05.93 to beat Bates (7:29.17) and Bowdoin (7:29.91). The women's novice four won as well with a 7:54.99 clocking and easily defeated Bowdoin 'A' (9:04.19), Bates (9:26.12), and Bowdoin 'B' (9:29.67).

The Mules got a second from the men's varsity four boat (time not available) to winner Bates. Two Bowdoin boats finished by the Mules in the race. The women's varsity four also placed second (8:02.06) to Bates (7:30.15) and defeated two Bowdoin crews.

Bates, which won the President's Cup, also won the women's second varsity eight in 6:59.19 to defeat two Colby boats (7:07.34 and 7:37.23). The men's second varsity eight had a problem while racing in second place and had to settle for third in 6:40.63.
