Women's cross country 11th at NCAA meet
NORTHFIELD, Minn. --- The Colby College women placed 11th out of 32 teams and were second among New England Small College Athletic Conference teams while men's runner John Swain took 78th place at the NCAA Division III Cross Country Championships on Saturday at St. Olaf College.
Amherst won the women's national title with a score of 120, but the Mules finished second among league schools. Colby had finished behind Amherst, Williams, and Bowdoin in taking fourth at last weekend's New England Division III NCAA Qualifier. However, the Mules easily beat Williams (14th place), Middlebury (15th), and Bowdoin (27th) on Saturday. Anna King placed 45th and Cassie Knight was 46th for Colby, but both runners had the same time of 22:28. Liz Petit took 133rd place in 23:14, Emma Linhard was 141st in 23:16, and Mandy Ivey was 150th with a time of 23:18. Jen MacDowell took 188th in 23:32 and Katrina Gravel was 230th in 23:55. King was 27th and Knight took 28th among runners with teams represented in the field. The Mules had a team score of 358. Sarah Zerzan of Willamette won the women's individual national title with a 20:54 clocking. Swain, who automatically qualified for the national meet after taking fifth at last weekend's New England Division III NCAA Qualifier, had a time of 25:42 over the men's 8-kilometer course.
