Message from C Club President Alex Wilson ’73

Dear C Club Member: This is my second term as C Club president, and I’m looking forward to sharing newsworthy items with you. But first, let me thank you for your membership in the C Club and for your continued support of Colby athletics. Our annual membership fees help support our student athletes and the athletic program in a variety of ways. Last summer the C Club Executive Committee began to discuss steps we might take to be more productive in our support for Colby athletics. For more than ten years the C Club’s Executive Committee had run its tri-annual meetings jointly with the Alumni Council Athletics Committee. The C Club and the Athletics Committee share many common interests, but both groups have agreed that we can be more effective in our support for Colby athletics by reorganizing and forming a number of subcommittees to focus on specific tasks and issues. At our January 2007 meetings, the C Club Executive Committee agreed to become one of three Athletics Committee subcommittees. Each subcommittee (the others are fund raising and mentoring) will meet separately, set its own goals, and focus on its own agenda. As president of the C Club I’ll be responsible for attending the Athletics Committee meetings, providing updates on C Club affairs, and reporting progress made toward achieving our goals. Karl Dornish ’54 and Arthur Brennan ’68 will chair the fund raising and mentoring subcommittees respectively. Both of their subcommittees are taking on important matters, and both have made some good progress since January. Please read Karl Dornish’s article on fund raising for athletics, which accompanies this newsletter. Arthur Brennan will contribute an article about the mentoring subcommittee’s work in a future C Club newsletter. Since January, the C Club Executive Committee has reaffirmed the C Club’s mission: “... to bring alumni, parents, and friends together in support of Colby athletics.” We also have determined that our next priority must be to do everything we can to make C Club membership a worthwhile experience for alumni, parents, and other friends of Colby athletics. By increasing the value of a C Club membership, we will grow both our numbers and our resources, and our support for Colby athletics will reach new levels and accomplish more than ever before. To this end we are planning a survey of current and former C Club members plus other alumni and parents of current student athletes. Our survey will help us determine what the universe of potential C Club members thinks about what the C Club is doing and how our time and efforts might best be spent. We are going to distribute the survey by e-mail within the next week or two, so please keep an eye open for it. Please take a few moments to complete and return our survey when you receive it. We value everyone’s opinions, and we’ll use the information gathered to plan future C Club activities, programs, and services. If you would like to participate in our survey but do not receive Colby e-mail correspondence, please contact Karin Weston in Colby’s Office of Alumni Relations at 207-859-4315. Karin will get you registered for e-mail delivery or send you a paper copy of the survey. Our goal is to tabulate the survey responses and use the information in time for the 2007-08 school year (i.e., the C Club’s next membership renewal period). Please complete and return your survey as quickly as you can. Thanks again for your support for the C Club and for Colby athletics. Enjoy your spring, and I hope to see you in the stands or on the sidelines sometime soon. Sincerely, Alex Wilson ’73 President, Colby C Club
