Men's lacrosse has joined the elite Division III colleges in the sport during the last 10 years. Colby has been ranked in the top 20 often during this period.
The Mules were 19th in the country in 1994 and finished 16th in Division III after the 1998 season. Current head coach Rob Quinn's teams ranked in the top 20 during his first two years at Colby. The 2002 squad posted an 11-5 record, finished 20th in the country, and made the New England Small College Athletic Conference title game.
Kevin Plummer '89 was the first Colby All-America player in men's lacrosse. Matt Williams '99, Gabe Duncan-Roitman '02, and John Shea '02 also have earned All-America honors.
Men's lacrosse started as a varsity program at Colby in 1972.
Coaching consistency has been a big part of the success of the women's lacrosse program, which counts only two head coaches since the team was started in 1978. Current head coach Heidi Godomsky is the all-time leader in career wins with more than 100. Deborah Pluck, the only other coach in women's lacrosse history, had a 93-73 record from 1978 to 1993.
Women's lacrosse remains a force nationally in Division III play with national rankings among the top 20 being the norm. Godomsky's 2003 and 2005 squads had the highest finishes ever in the national poll (11th).
Ally King '03, Marcia Ingraham '02, Kristina Stahl '99, and Kara Marchant '97 all earned All-America honors twice. Five other players have been awarded All-America honors, and more than a dozen have earned Regional All-America honors under Godomsky. Emily Batchelder '83 was Colby's first All-America player.
