Men's ice hockey remains one of the top athletic programs at Colby since the team started play in 1922. The team has reached conference playoffs 25 times since 1965, including the last 13 years in a row.
Great coaches and players have shone over the years. Bill Millett '25, Charlie Holt, Jack Kelley, and current head coach Jim Tortorella all have had great teams over the years. Tortorella is the all-time wins leader at Colby with a career record of 172-85-21.
Ron Ryan '62 remains the all-time leading scorer at Colby with 104 goals and 141 assists for 245 points. Ryan, now president of the Philadelphia Flyers of the National Hockey League, is one of 10 players who have earned All-America status.
Robert Koh '99, a defenseman, is the only three-time All-America hockey player. Vin Paolucci '87, Brian Cronin '96, and Dan Lavergne '97 all earned All-America honors and round out a history of outstanding forwards in the program.
Elbridge B. Ross '35 competed with the U.S. National Team in the Winter Olympics and was at the 1936 Berlin Olympics. Joe Wallace '45 played hockey professionally and competed in the 1948 London Olympics.
Patrick Walsh '05 is the most current All-American hockey player, while Nick Bayley '05 earned National Academic All-America honors three years in a row and was outstanding on the ice as well in leading Colby in scoring all four years.
The first varsity women's hockey game was played against Brown in 1975. Since then, the women's ice hockey program has produced three All-Americans.
Meaghan Sittler '98 and Courtney Kennedy '01 both earned American Women's Hockey Association All-America honors in the 1997-98 season, and Josie Chapman '01 also was selected as an All-American. Sittler is Colby's all-time leading scorer with 119 goals and 121 assists for 240 points. Kennedy, who starred for Colby for one season before transferring to the University of Minnesota, later played for the U.S. National Team at the Salt Lake City Winter Olympics. Chapman still holds the Colby career record for shutouts in a career (11) and is tied for shutouts in a season (6).
Barb Gordon '97 ranks second all-time in scoring behind Sittler with 110 goals and 112 assists for 222 points.
Robert Ewell '71 coached the team from 1978 to 1985 and remains the all-time wins leader with a 74-53-4 record.
