Men's crew started in 1994 and has quickly become one of the top Division III squads in New England.
Since the NCAA does not sponsor a men's crew national championship, Colby has not been allowed the opportunity to compete nationally for a title. However, the Mules finished second overall in New England and were considered the top Division III crew in the country in 1998-99.
Men's crew continues to be a force under current head coach Stew Stokes. The Mules annually win the Colby-Bates-Bowdoin (CBB) title and remain one of the top squads in New England.
No athletic program at Colby has accomplished so much so fast as women's crew. The 2002-03 crew under head coach Stew Stokes earned Colby's first-ever team NCAA Division III championship on a windy day in Indianapolis. Colby's varsity crew, led by All-America selection Leah Hagamen '05, finished in first place among the 12 boats at the national finals.
Besides Colby's national championship, crew graduate Hilary Gehman '93 was a member of the United States National Team at the 2000 Summer Olympic Games in Sydney, Australia, and also competed in the Olympics in Athens, Greece, in 2004.
Colby women's crew started as a program in 1994 and 10 years later is already a national power. The Mules finished second in the country during the 2001-02 academic year and sixth in 2005-06.
Women's crew is strong academically as well. Eleanor Boyce '03, who was a member of the national championship varsity crew, was a National Academic All-America selection and graduated with the top grade-point average of any Colby student-athlete.
