Challenge at Colby
When members of the faculty and administration talk about the academic challenge that characterizes the Colby experience, they are not talking about the competitive sense of the word but rather about challenging students to think and to question. Beyond introducing new information, professors reveal new and different ways of seeing the world—perspectives meant to challenge your world view.

The Faculty
Associate Professor of Art Bevin Engman works with students. For generations, the extraordinary faculty has been acknowledged as Colby’s greatest asset. Distinguished scholars, researchers, and authors from around the world, these faculty members have chosen Colby because they love teaching and because they are eager to work closely with students—to build relationships that go beyond the classrooms and the four years that you’ll spend at Colby.

Flexibility and Choices
Project collaborationThe framework of The Colby Plan and the requirements ensure that students graduate from Colby with a broad base of knowledge and depth in at least one area—the major—that provides a thorough understanding of research methods, precise writing and speaking skills, and critical analytical abilities. Within that framework, there is a tremendous amount of flexibility as students, in consultation with their advisors, select courses, design research, and arrange internships.

Colby and the World
Crawford Family Professor of Religion Nikky Singh takes learning outdoors.Colby is home to one of the most international colleges in the U.S. That’s not just the College talking. It is the judgment of NAFSA: Association of International Educators, which gave Colby a 2005 Senator Paul Simon Award for Campus Internationalization. Half of our 52 majors have an international component, more than 100 courses satisfy requirements in the international studies major, 70 percent of our students study abroad, and almost 70 countries are represented in the student body.
