Every year the BI 493 class, "Problems in Environmental Science," tackles a major group project in the real world. Working as an environmental consulting group, the class employs methods used by private firms and government agencies to investigate one particular environmental issue in Maine, most often the factors that affect water quality in an area lake. Results are presented to lake associations and the state Department of Environmental Protection, which not only value the data but almost always act on it to mitigate pollution and improve lake water quality.
Recently the class was featured on Public Radio's "Maine Things Considered" for its study of Lake George and Oak Pond.
