Cotter Union, Colby’s student center, is at the physical center of campus. Students pick up mail there and visit The Spa for coffee or snacks or to watch a big game on the plasma television. It is also where many major events are scheduled, whether it’s the annual International Extravaganza, a rally against homophobia, or the hilarious “Mr. Colby” pageant. On a typical weekday, the lobby of Cotter Union is likely to be the scene of ticket sales for an upcoming concert, Peace Corps recruiting, and an Amnesty International petition drive. The Blue Light Pub is open evenings for students who are over 21. Students are engaged in the planning and design process for a major expansion and thorough renovation of Cotter Union, with construction expected to begin in 2006. Plans call for a central atrium to house a coffee bar and a new configuration of The Spa. A small campus store, public computers, a television lounge, and spaces for events of various sizes also are planned.
