Environmental Commitment
“Colby sets example in ‘green’ movement.” That was the headline when the Waterville Morning Sentinel looked into Colby’s commitment to environmental initiatives. From buying only “green” electricity to using geothermal heat in the first green-certified academic building in Maine to environmentally friendly practices in the dining halls, Colby has emerged as a leader among colleges and universities committed to conservation and sustainable initiatives. In 2003 Colby decided to purchase only electricity generated from renewable, in-state sources. “Colby’s role is really very important in making sure that other institutions now have green power choices,” said Tom Tietenberg, the Mitchell Family Professor of Economics, a world-renowned expert on environmental economics and emissions and a member of Colby’s student/faculty/staff Environmental Advisory Group. For its greening efforts Colby was recognized with an Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Environmental Merit Award for 2003 and two Maine Governor’s Awards for Environmental Excellence, in 2002 and 2004. |
