UN Peacekeeper Lt. General Romeo Dallaire spoke as part of a conference on genocideThe sheer number and variety of lectures, discussions, and performances on the calendar keep the campus humming. Every academic department offers speakers and programs each semester, and College-wide events reflect the intellectual curiosity of a diverse community. Last year, the first weekend in April, for example, brought a varied program of high-interest events to campus, including two conferences initiated and planned by students: Shadows of Rwanda, about the genocide in central Africa, and a Campus Greening Summit, which brought student environmentalists from a dozen campuses in Maine and Atlantic Canada to learn about Colby’s pioneering initiatives and to share ideas on sustainability and climate change. The Colby Chorale returned from a performing tour in Prague and Vienna to present a concert in Lorimer Chapel; the Cotter Debate brought national experts to campus to argue for and against privatization of Social Security; and baseball, lacrosse, and tennis teams had home games. The following Monday kicked off “Burst The Bubble” Week, with events each day highlighting the strong links between Colby and the city of Waterville.
