Jim Terhune, Vice President for Student Affairs and Dean of Students

Student Affairs Division

The role of the student affairs division is to assist students with all aspects of their lives at the College.  The relationship begins when we correspond with students the summer after acceptance and by providing a student telephone hot-line (207-859-4252) to respond to questions of new students and parents.  Orientation to the College, through Colby Outdoor Orientation Trips (Coot 2) and the regular Orientation sessions, provides an opportunity to acclimate new students to the College's services, resources, traditions and practices.

The student affairs division provides services in residential life, housing, student activities, academic advising, intercultural affairs, as well as personal counseling.  Through a 24-hours on-call program, one of the professional members of the staff is available to assist students and parents at any hour of the day.

We believe that learning occurs outside the classroom, as well as in the lecture halls, classes, seminars, and libraries.  We support the mission of the College by encouraging intellectual, social, and personal growth.

                            Student Affairs Mission Statement

The Colby College division of student affairs exists to contribute to, support, and enhance the College's mission to provide students with a broad acquaintance with human knowledge designed to enable each student to find and fulfill his or her own unique potential.

The student affairs staff provides instruction, advice, and support to help students to become critical thinkers, effective communicators, ethical leaders, engaged citizens, and creators of knowledge with broad exposure to, and understanding of human difference and diversity.
