2008 Inspirations Program Schedule

 

 

The Inspirations Program is designed to offer fun, informative workshops on campus during the month of January.  These casual, not-for-credit, not-for-profit workshops are offered to Colby students for enjoyment and to enhance the JanPlan experience.  It is not the intent for Colby College to make a profit on these workshops.

As payments for the Inspirations Workshops will be applied to your Colby Card, you should know your balance!   If you do not have sufficient funds available on your card, please be aware that your account will have a negative balance until your next deposit.  Payments are non-refundable if workshops are canceled after 12/28/07.

MONDAY PROGRAMS

(1/7, 1/14, 1/21, 1/28)

Workshop:  Making Peace - Peer Mediation
Instructor:   Rachel Henderson
Time:  10-11 am
Location:  Lovejoy, 246
Description: 

Interested in diplomacy, dispute resolution, or reducing conflict?  This course will give you an overview and some practice skills in mediation.  The course will explore conflict in human interactions and the opportunities it presents for change.  We will delve into transformative mediation and problem solving mediation.  This is a ‘hands on’ course so expect to participate in some problem solving!

Workshop: Intro to Harmonica
Instructor:  Mike Mariska
Time:  5-6 pm
Location: Program Space, Cotter Union, 111
Description: Learn the basics of this most versatile (and portable) instrument.  Starting with the most basic techniques and songs, and as time allows, move into more advanced methods of genres like Blues, Jazz, Rock, and Folk.
Fee:  None
Supplies: Harmonica to be purchased by students prior to first workshop – estimated cost is $20.00

Recommended Harmonica:  Horner Special 20

Workshop:  Introduction to Quilting
Day:  Every Monday and Wednesday
Time:  6:30-9pm
Fee: None
Location:   107 Leonard / Quilting Club Room
Description: Some people like to look at quilts.  Some people like to make quilts and some people like to look at quilts and dream about making them.  At the end of this workshop you will have completed a 45” x 63” quilt andhave learned all the skills and tricks to make your quilting dreams come true. The workshop will meet every Monday and Wednesday evening.  We will also do a “shop hop” on one Saturday (weather permitting) and go to as many quilt shops in the area as possible.  We will pick the date at ourworkshop.
Supplies: There are fabric requirements that will be needed for the first meeting.  Click here to download the list of fabric requirements.

TUESDAY PROGRAMS

(1/8, 1/15, 1/22, 1/29)

Workshop: Learn to Knit
Instructor:   Kate Talbot
Time: 6:30-8:30 pm 
Location:  Mary Low Lounge, 112                    
Fee: None
Description: Introduction to the basics of knitting.  Learn about straight, double point and circular needles.  Instruction of many stitches and how to read the patterns.  Complete at least two projects.
Supplies:

All supplies must be purchased prior to the first workshop.   
• (1) set of size 6 or size 7 knitting needles
• (1) set of 10" (short) straight needles or circular needles of any length - longer or flexi needles are fine
• (1) ball of yarn, worsted weight, in a relatively smooth fiber (no fuzzy, fancy yearns to start with)

Limit:  15 Students
 
Workshop:  International Folk Dance
Time:    3:30 pm (1 hour) / 3 workshops 1/8, 1/15, 1/22 only
Location:  Athletics Studio, Athletic Center
Fee: None
Description:   Designed for beginners, this workshop will introduce students to classic line and circle dances of Greece, Israel, Serbia, Romania, France, Scotland, Russia, South Africa, and other parts of the world.  The instructor works at Colby and has taught folk dancing at the Downeast Country Dance Festival and to numerous college, community, and religious groups for over 15 years.  International students participating in the workshop are encouraged to share their dances with the group as well. Consider this unique opportunity for soulful cultural immersion while getting exercise and having fun!

Workshop: Focus the Nation - Global Warming
Time: 4:00-5:30 pm
Instructor:   Samantha Given-Denis
Location:  Diamond, 145
Description: Are you interested in Environmental Activism?  Are you ready to help address climate change on the local level?  Do you want to create a climate change on the Colby campus?  This  inspirations workshop will  encorporate diologue, discussion, and activities geared towards strategizing solutions for Colby to make its contribution towards curbing global climate change.   The workshop's goal will be to create a background for integral planning for Focus the  Nation, a huge event that will be  coming to all NESCAC campuses on February 6th.  Focus the Nation will call to attention the threat of climate change and the need to take action  against it into the mindset of each Colby student, faculty  and staff member.  This JanPlan,  take the opportunity to put your environmental concers into action by strategizing ways for  Colby to be greener institution and to make Focus the Nation go out with a bang!

WEDNESDAY PROGRAMS

(1/9, 1/16, 1/23, 1/30)

Workshop: Getting Familiar with the Fitness Center
Time: 8-9 am
Fee: None
Location:   Colby Athletic Center
Description: Learn how to use all of the machines in the fitness center.  This workshop will teach you basic resistance training techniques and various cardiovascular exercises.  You will also design a workout program based on your goals. 
Limit:  15 Students
 
Workshop: Introduction to Snowshoeing
Time: 2-4 pm 
Location: Meet at the Information Desk in Pulver at 2 pm
Description:  This introductory class will include easy to moderate 2-3 hour snowshoe hikes in the general area and possibly in the Kennebec Highlands. The hikes will take place under most conditions with final weather determination made by the instructor.  Snow shoeing is easy to master and a wonderful and healthy way to experience the beauty of a Maine winter.
Your instructor is a Registered Maine Guide with many years of guiding clients in all seasons and in many locations throughout Maine and beyond its borders.  Hikes will take place on Wednesday afternoons.

What you need:       

• Snowshoes (if you do not have snowshoes, we will try to secure some – supplies are limited)
• Layered, warm  non-cotton clothing
• Water
• Hiking boots

Workshop: Ballroom Dance
Time:  3:30-5:30 p.m.
Location:  Anthony Party Space, 020
Description: This workshop will be taught by the Ballroom Dance Team Coach and members.  Weeks one and two you will learn Samba, weeks three and four, you will learn to Tango.  No experience necessary, just a desire to have fun.  Now, when the music starts, you can be the first one on the floor!
Limit:  20 Students
 
Workshop: Introduction to Cooking
Instructor: Mike Ingalls
Time: 5-7 pm
Location: Foss Dining Hall
Description:  This workshop will demonstrate how easy cooking can be.  Learn how to make dinner for yourself & others, get some hands on training, and have fun with food.
Limit:  10 Students
 
Workshop:  Meditation for Peace
Instructor:  Laura Bridgeman
Time:  5-6 pm
Fee: None
Location: Rose Chapel, Lorimer, 104
Description:  Learn about the timing and location that is best for meditation, techniques to quiet the mind, posture, breathing, visualization practices.  This workshop is designed for beginners or people who wish inspiration for making their meditation practice more regular.
Limit:  20 Students
 
Workshop:  Hip-Hop and Jazz Dance
Instructor:   Holly Collins
Time: 4:00-5:30 p.m.
Fee: $8.00
Location: Aerobics Studio, Athletic Center
Description:   This 1.5 hour jazz dance class includes a warm-up, technique, progressions across the floor, and learning choreography to various types of hip-hop, and alternative music.  Students should arrive dressed to dance wearing comfortable, flexible, breathable clothing.
Limit:   20 Students

Workshop:  Introduction to Auto Maintenance
Time: 2:00-3:00pm
Fee:  None
Location:   PPD Garage
Description:    This 4 session workshop will cover the following topics:
• tire changes, tire wear, air pressure, emergency road side kits
• oil changes, emergency dash warning lights
• batteries, fluids and fluid levels
• belts, hoses, wipers
Supplies:   Safety glasses are required and will be supplied by PPD.
Limit:    8 Students
 
Workshop:  Introduction to Rock Wall Climbing
Instructor: Kate Sirianni
Time: 7-8 pm
Fee: None
Location:   Colby Indoor Climbing Wall, Athletic Center
Description:   This workshop is designed to provide an overview of the basics of rock climbing.  No previous experience is necessary.
Limit:  10 Students
 
Workshop:     Personal Safety and Defense
Instructor:  Colby Security
Time:  7-9 pm
Fee:    None
Location: Athletics Studio, Athletic Center
Description:   This workshop is designed to provide students with safety practices and defensive tactics.  Heighten your awareness, build confidence, and establish personal safety plans for defensive responses.
Limit:  20 Students

 

OTHER:

Workshop:  Wilderness EMT Certification

NOTE:
Payment MUST be applied against your Colby card on or before 1/1/08.  If not, you will be removed from the workshop and will need to make alternative arrangements to participate.
Dates:   February 1-5, 2008 (5 day workshop)
Instructor:  Rebecca Kamins
Time:  8am-5pm
Location:  Lovejoy 208 and Outdoors
Description: This workshop is recommended for EMTs and people taking the EMT course.  At the end of this workshop, students will receive their wilderness EMT certification.
Fee:  $275.00
Supplies:  Dress in warm clothing.
