Why can't I call long distance from my residence? Office?
All residence phones require the use of a calling card for long distance calls. Most office phones have direct access yet some are limited (distance or time-of-day) or have no LD access. Think about the security of your phone before requesting a change.

Is it possible to obtain a calling card for official college business?

Colby Telecom has a supply AT&T prepaid long distance calling cards in non-lapsing 60 minute increments. Departments are charged $5.05 per card. Complete a Service Request and be sure to inlude your department's account (center) number to charge.

Can I make 900 calls from campus phones?

Sorry, 900 calls are not permitted from campus phones due to the high fraud risk.

 
Phone Line & Phone Set FAQ's

I disconnected my office phone, and now it's dead. What did I do?
Colby's office style digital phone sets will 'disable' if disconnected overnight but they can be re-enabled. Select the "Go Back" button below and complete a Service Req.

I can hear callers so why can't they hear me?
Check to be sure the 'Handsfree/Mute' button is not depressed. If that's not it and the problem seems to come and go, the handset is probably bad. We have spares so tell us what you need through a Service Req

How can deaf or hearing impaired people communcate at Colby?

Special services are in place for those who are deaf or hard of hearing. Visit Services for Deaf.

Can I enter my campus phone number on the Nat'l Do-Not-Call Registry?

Yes, BUT! The federal law applies only to residential phone customers and all Colby extensions are business numbers. Consequently, telemarketers are not bound to honor it although they may. If you want to enter your extension, go to Do-Not-Call Registry.

Conference Calling FAQ's

What conference services are available at Colby?
There are two ways...
1) The easiest and and most affordable is through Colby's phone system. Look for the
Conference Key on your office digital phone. (Not available on analog sets.) No Conference Key? Complete a Service Request.
2) Colby also has a standard arrangement with Verizon for conference services. Desigend for on-demand availability, ease of use and cost-effectiveness, the service is automated with no reservation required for Subscribers. It can accommodate up to 30 participants.

How do I establish a Colby/Verizon Conference Call?
First, you have to be an authorized conference Subscriber which can be done on-line.

How do I join a scheduled Colby/Verizon Conference?     Easy 1-2-3 Instructions...
1. Dial the toll free Dial-In Nbr provided by Subscriber
2. At prompt, enter Passcode, provided by Subscriber, followed by # sign.
3. At prompt and following tone, record your name.
    If the conference has not yet started, you may be placed on music hold.
    When the conference starts, you will be joined after completing step 3.

Is there a high quality conference phone on campus?
Yes, we have both analog and digital models available for check out from Media Services, and you can reserve one through the web.

How do I change the greeting on my voice mailbox?

Why can't I log into my voice mailbox?
Your mailbox may be locked down due to too many unsuccessful login attempts, or because your password was changed. Create a service request to have your voice mailbox password reset to the default.

Why can't I find a message I listened to yesterday?
Each night, the voice mail system cleans itself by erasing all messages already played for the mailbox owner. Sorry, it's gone! To save messages in the future, forward to yourself but don't play it until you are ready to have it deleted.

I'm at my phone and it doesn't ring yet the message light goes on. Why?
Someone probably sent you a group message or expressed a message directly to your mailbox. You can express a voice message to any campus voice mailbox by dialing x4100. 

 
Cell Phone FAQ's

What are the primary cell phone service providers in the Waterville area?
US Cellular and Unicel are the two cell phone providers licensed by the FCC for the greater Waterville area. Other providers such as Verizon and T-Mobile also operate in the area on the towers of USC and Unicel respectively.

Do other providers work in Waterville?
They should by roaming to either US Cellular or Unicel towers but it can get expensive depending on the company. Also, some of the larger companies program their phones to do everything they can to hang on to a signal, even a poor one, from one of their preferred towers, which may be in Portland, while ignoring the tower just off campus. Before making a long term commitment for service in the Waterville area, we suggest you do your homework.

How do I obtain a cell phone for official college business?
For short-term use such as a business trip or weekend outing, a loaner cell phone can be reserved through ITS Media Services in Miller.  See
