Colby College invites applications for a tenure-track position in physics, beginning September 1, 2009. We seek applicants with a commitment to excellence in both research and teaching at the undergraduate level. Preference will be given to condensed matter experimental physicists who plan to conduct research primarily on-campus, with opportunities for student involvement. Significant start-up funding and research space is available. We particularly seek candidates who will help maintain and strengthen the appeal of our physics program to women and members of under-represented groups.
The successful candidate will join four other physicists with active on-campus research programs in laser cooling and cold atomic collisions, theoretical particle physics, strong-field quantum dynamics, and infrared astronomy. Members of the department teach courses for non-science majors, as well as gateway introductory courses for science majors, in addition to courses for physics majors. Faculty members also supervise capstone research projects that are required of all senior physics students. Laboratory instruction at all levels is shared by all members of the department. The department has a teaching assistant/technician, and shares an electronics technician/machinist and a workstation administrator with other departments. More information about Colby’s physics program can be found at http://www.colby.edu/physics/
Applicants must have a Ph.D. in physics, and post-doctoral and teaching experience is preferred. Applicants should submit curriculum vitae, descriptions of teaching experience and interests, descriptions of research (including publications), and three letters of recommendation to:
