English - Department Chair, Associate or Full Professor of British Literature

The Department of English invites applications for an associate or full professor who will serve as department chair, beginning July 1, 2009. Preferred areas of specialization include Eighteenth-Century Literature, Transatlantic studies, Irish Studies, or non-Shakespearean Drama, interests in visual/material culture desirable. A strong record of teaching and scholarship is required; administrative experience necessary. The department offers both English and English-Creative Writing majors; the department chair works closely with the Director of Creative Writing and the Director of the Writer’s Center. Responsibilities would include teaching three courses (a two-course release from the five-course load while serving as chair) or four courses with a stipend. Colby is a highly selective liberal arts college (with approximately 1800 students), recognized for excellence in undergraduate education and for close student-faculty interaction. The College has a generous sabbatical policy and offers funds for research and professional travel as well as for start-up.
