I came to Colby College in the fall of 2002 as a one year sabbatical replacement Visiting Assistant Professor in the Psychology department and never expected to grow roots in central Maine. Then, after remaining at Colby as a Faculty Fellow for another two years I took over as the mentor for Posse 3 (class of 2008) for the spring of 2005 and subsequently moved into my current position as Coordinator of Multicultural Programs and Support working out of the Dean of Students Office. My primary duty is being the mentor for first and second year Posse students and generally overseeing the Posse Program for all Posse Scholars at Colby. The best part of my job is getting to know each scholar during our bi-weekly individual meetings. We talk about everything from exams to relationships and I use the time to listen and learn about their lives and feelings as well as provide the best information and guidance I can. I also facilitate weekly meetings for each Posse to keep the group dynamic alive and well. With the help of the Posse Leadership Committee I'm also able to put on a few all-Posse events a year such as a welcoming party for new scholars each September, bowling trips, game nights, and cookouts. Posse students also come to my house for dinner once a semester where they get to enjoy good home cooking and get to know my family.

Being a mentor is one of the most rewarding experiences I've ever had and once Posse scholars get to know me they typically feel comfortable coming to see me about any issues they are dealing with throughout their college careers. Though my office has endured it's share of tearful discussions, it's also a place Posse students come to hang-out, share good news, and enjoy laughter and good conversation. Anyone wanting to know what the term 'Posse Love' really means should spend a few minutes in my office when a cross-section of scholars has dropped by and it will be obvious.
