About Your Room ROOM DIMENSIONS Click here to view the floor plans for your residence hall. OCCUPANCY Most of our first-year student rooms are designed for two occupants, however, nearly one-third accommodate three students. First-year students are not housed in singles.
FURNITURE The college supplies a bed, a mattress (not a twin size - at 36" x 80", they are considered "extra long"), a study table with a chair, a wardrobe/closet, and a dresser for each person. You will need to bring your own bed linens (twin size contour sheets are not suggested, as they will not fit your bed), a mattress pad, a pillow, blankets, a bedspread, and towels. [Or, take advantage of the mailing from the Residence Hall Linens company you received in the mail.] Due to limited storage facilities for bed frames, Colby discourages the practice of constructing lofts. WALLS Most of the walls in the residence halls are made of sheet rock, painted a neutral color. We request that you use care when hanging posters by using very small tacks, or putty designed for this purpose. Shelving should be free-standing or hung from the molding near the ceiling. WINDOW TREATMENT Window shades or blinds are furnished for each window. If you intend to bring your own curtains, please refer to the following dimensions:
LIGHTING Study/desk lamps are not provided. Also, students residing in Heights, Averill, and Johnson residence halls should note that ceiling lights are not provided in these rooms. Due to potential for fire hazard, the college has banned the use of torchiere-style halogen lamps. Please select some other type of lamp when shopping to outfit your room. FLOORS All of our rooms have vinyl-tiled floors. If you wish to bring a carpet with you, a standard 9' x 12' will be sufficient. DOORS All doors on student rooms are made of solid wood, primarily oak. In an attempt to preserve their condition, we have installed an oak-framed, dry-erase (melamine) marker board on every door. When replacing the markers, please purchase the dry-erase type. KEYS Upon arrival you will receive a key for your room. The residence halls are locked 24 hrs/day, limiting access to the Colby community. Access is gained by the use of your I.D. card that will be issued to you upon arrival. Please keep your key and I.D. card with you and your door locked at all times. APPLIANCES Refrigerators will be available for rent from a private, approved contractor at Orientation. However, if you have a refrigerator, and it does not exceed our size limitation of 4.5 cubic feet, you may bring it along. Please do not bring hot plates, Coleman stoves, or other such cooking devices, as they are not permitted. You may bring electric irons, but they must be used in the laundry rooms. Small microwave ovens are acceptable. TELEPHONE SERVICE Telephone numbers have been randomly assigned to each room, and will be provided in August with your room assignment. Long distance service is not provided. Please purchase a calling card in advance. You will also need to bring your own telephone. CABLE TV Basic service is provided at no cost. However, you may contract for expanded service through the local cable provider if you wish. NETWORK OPPORTUNITIES Each student will have access to his/her own port that is networked with Ethernet (10-base-T). PETS We ask for your cooperation in support of our policy that requires student not bring, nor obtain after their arrival, a pet. The residence hall environment does not provide for the needs of most animals (nor is it fair to your neighbors who may suffer from allergies), not to mention other potential disruptions caused by having animals in the halls. MISCELLANEOUS A wastebasket is essential, but should be made of metal. Tapestry-type ceiling/wall hangings, candles, oil lamps, and incense are not permitted as they present a potential fire hazard. Substantial fines are imposed when these items are found. ROOM INSPECTIONS The college will conduct safety inspections in every student room at least once over the course of an academic year. Announcements will be made in each hall prior to the commencement of the inspection period. Either the hall staff or a member of the Office of Campus Life staff will visit each room to ensure the safety equipment (smoke alarms and sprinkler heads) is in good working order and that it has not been tampered with. While in the room, particular attention will be paid to other issues which could compromise the safety of the specific occupants, or the building residents as a whole. Although not limited to this list, some of these items include: candles, incense, torchiere-style halogen lamps (having bulbs rated at 250 watts or higher), unapproved cooking devices, oil lamps, and not surge-protected power strips. Occupants will be given 24 hours to correct any infractions and receive fines only if corrective action has not been taken prior to the follow-up inspection. Questions about your room?
