"I should be able to handle it myself"
Although it is possible to read and study on one's own, students come to college expressly for the opportunity to work with professors and to participate in structured educational activities. Similarly, it should be considered a sign of strength to choose to work with a professional around difficult personal issues. "Doing it on one's own" is certainly possible, but it might be easier, more comfortable or even faster to consult with someone who has lots of experience with such situations.
"What would other people think?"
It's always hard to do something new. Overcoming one's own reluctance to seek help for a perplexing situation needs to be seen as a strength, not as a weakness. Most of our work is with individuals experiencing ordinary life stresses. Counseling Services are offered with great concern for student's confidentiality. No one need know about your choice to seek counseling unless you choose to disclose it. The exception to this is, understandably, the threat of imminent danger to an individual. Counseling notes do NOT go into students' records.
"Can I choose my counselor?"
We encourage students to try us out, to find the best possible fit with a counselor. If the student prefers, or if the situation is beyond the expertise of our staff members, we can refer to professionals outside of the college.
