Faculty Grants Assistant Professor of Anthropology Winifred Tate was awarded in June 2008, a grant of $20,030 by the United States Institute for Peace for her project, "Women as Peacebuilders." Professor of Chemistry D. Whitney King received a grant of $2,000 from the East Pond Association for analysis of water quality during summer 2008. Assistant Professor of Psychology Michael Richardson was funded for three years by the National Science Foundation ($118,812) in April 2008 to study perceptual pick-up processes in interpersonal communication. In April 2008, Associate Professor and Chair of Computer Science Bruce A. Maxwell and Leslie Brainerd Arey Professor of Biosciences W. Herbert Wilson, Jr. were awarded $100,905 by the National Science Foundation for a project titled, "CI-TEAM Demonstration of Remote Robotic Exploration and Experimentation." In April 2008, Assistant Professor of Psychology Melissa Glenn received a grant from the NSF SOMAS program to determine the role of dietary choline in ameliorating symptoms of depression in rat models. Associate Professor and Chair of Computer Science Bruce A. Maxwell received a grant of $132,128 from the National Science Foundation in October 2007, in partnership with Drexel University for research in humanoids and universally accessible infrastructures. In August 2007, Assistant Professor of Mathematics Nora Ganter received a grant of $40,058 from the National Science Foundation for her research project titled, "Interactions of Elliptic Cohomology with Other Subjects." In August 2007, Associate Professor of Art and East Asian Studies Ankeney Weitz received a grant of $1,500 for Asian Art in the undergraduate curriculum from the ASIANetwork.
Institutional Grants In April 2008, the Howard Hughes Medical Institute awarded Colby a grant of $1,000,000 for undergraduate science education. In May 2008, the Clare Boothe Luce Program of the Henry Luce Foundation approved support for a Clare Boothe Luce Assistant Professorship in Geology for seven years totalling $959,674. In May 2008, Colby received a grant of $150,000 for financial aid for students from middle income families from the William Randolph Hearst Foundations. In February 2008, the Henry Luce Foundation provided a grant of $25,000 to support the Colby College Museum of Art's 50th Anniversary celebration. In March 2008, Colby College was awarded $20,000 for two Davis Projects for Peace by the Davis United World College Scholars Program for two projects. The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation awarded Colby $1,400,000 for hiring teaching/research postdoctoral fellows. The Henry Luce Foundation granted Colby $1,320,201 for hiring an assistant professor in computer science, a postdoctoral fellow working at the interface of neurbiology and computer science, and undergraduate summer research assistants. In December 2007, the Margaret E. Burnham Charitable Trust awarded Colby $10,000 to support the Colby Cares About Kids mentoring program. During the ten months, Colby has received $20,000 from the Smart Family Foundation to support financial aid for undergraduates.
