Artist's rendition of proposed renovation to Roberts Row dorm
Colby’s comprehensive dorm renovations program begun in the mid-1990s moves to Roberts Row in spring 2008, with Pierce and Perkins-Wilson (the former Zeta Psi and Phi Delta Theta fraternities respectively) in line for major overhauls. A $4.7-million project will expand and remodel the two buildings in time for students to move in again for fall 2008. Enhancements will include an addition to each building to accommodate an elevator, staircase, and study rooms.

There are seven former fraternity houses, and the College intends to renovate them over the next several years. Following the renovations to each building, no student beds will be located in the basements of the Roberts Row buildings. The long-range plan includes conversion of the Roberts Building to residential space after the bookstore and the Psychology Department are able to move out.

Exterior work was began in March 2008, with interior construction starting after graduation. Vice President for Student Affairs Jim Terhune said, “The renovations will enhance the quality of the spaces and make these more desirable for students,” noting that the small size (each building is about 8,100 square feet) works well for the self-governance, community building, and civic engagement that are part of the Colby 360 plan for campus life.
