These instructions cover adding a printer in Windows 2000 and XP. From the Start menu go to Settings > Printers (and Faxes) click to open a window. Click on Add a Printer which opens a wizard Click next to get to the following screen Make certain that the Local Printer radio button is selected and that the Automatically detect…box is not checked. When it looks like the above, click on Next Click on the "Create a new port" radio button and click and drag the drop down box to select Standard TCP/IP Port as show above. Click on Next. As the next screen advises, be certain that the printer is on and that you are connected to the network. When you have confirmed both of these conditions, click Next. In the Printer Name or IP Address text box, type in the numerical address of the printer you wish to add (printers are labeled) and click next. The next screen displays what you have entered to this point. If everything appears to be correct, click on Finish. After a short interval, the following screen should appear. You will need to select the correct Manufacturer (either HP or Xerox ) and Printer model (ex. HP LaserJet 4100 series for LIB_Public_2 on the main floor of Miller). NOTE: If the correct model does not appear in the Printers window, you will have to install the driver for that printer. To obtain the driver, go to the manufacturer's web site. Most manufacturers provide drivers which can be downloaded. The next screen asks you to name the printer; you may call it anything you like, this is the text that will appear below the printer’s icon. Leave it as the default printer so that you can print now, it is very easy to switch to any other installed printer later. The next screen asks if you want to share this printer, make certain that No is selected, click Next. The next screen asks if you wish to print a test page, select Yes and click Finish. The driver should install and you will be returned to this page showing your newly installed printer. The checkmark indicates that it is the current default printer; it will be used to print until you change it. NOTE: To change the default printer, right click on the printer to which you wish to make the default and select Set as Default Printer. The checkmark will move to indicate the change (in some cases you may need to close and reopen to refresh the window). If for any reason this procedure fails and you are unable to install a library printer, please contact Larry Brown – lbrown@colby.edu . |
