Policy

  • Computers circulate to current Colby College students, faculty, staff, and partners in good standing, only.
  • "In good standing" means that the presentation of a valid Colby College ID and that the borrower’s record is not blocked.
  • All library privileges can be suspended if computers are not returned on time. When this occurs follow up with a permanent staff member is required.
  • Borrowers are expected to protect Loaner computers from damage and theft.
  • No food or drink should be in the vicinity of borrowed Loaner computers.
  • Computers are available on a first-come, first-served basis, only. No holds, or advance reservations are permitted.
  • 4 Hour loan periods. No renewals. No overnight lending.
  • One computer per borrower.
  • When the laptop is shut down files or software saved or downloaded to a computer’s hard drive are deleted and cannot be retrieved. You must save your work to external media (e.g. USB Memory stick, or a burnable CD). Burnable CD’s are available for purchase at the Miller or Olin Circulation Desk.
  • The libraries are not responsible for battery error that may cause data loss.
  • The libraries are not responsible for damage to your personal computer if you use our power adapters with your computer.

 

Procedure

Checking Out

  • Computers are checked out at the Circulation Desks during regular business hours.
  • Library staff uses the borrowing agreement to select the equipment to be borrowed. Likewise they explain the terms of the borrowing agreement to the borrower. The Library Staff initials the agreement.
  • The borrower signs and dates the agreement.
  • Each item loaned checked out through the Library’s Circulation system.

Checking In

  • Returned computers and components are checked in immediately.
  • The circulation staff performs a visual check of the laptop to ensure that the following components are intact:
    • Computer
    • Battery
    • AC Power Adapter
  • The laptop is returned to the locked cabinet.
    • The battery is recharged at that time.
    • The computer’s hard drive is re-imaged at that time.

Fines and Liabilities

  • Overdue fines are $1.00 per hour. A portion of an hour counts as a full hour (e.g. 10 minutes = 60 minutes).
  • After 24 hours a replacement fee will be imposed. And a loss of all borrowing privileges may be implemented.
  • Borrowers will also be billed for the replacement cost or repair of lost, stolen or damaged computers.
  • Borrowers will also be billed for the replacement cost or repair of lost, stolen or damaged peripherals (e.g. power adapters, batteries, etc).

Borrowing Agreement:

By checking this computer out I am agreeing to the following:

  • I agree to assume full responsibility for any laptop computer issued through the Colby Libraries for the time it is checked out to me.
  • I agree to pay Colby College for the full cost if the laptop computer and or any peripheral charged out to me if lost or stolen.
  • I agree to pay the full repair cost charged by the College’s contracted repair service if the computer and or any peripherals are damaged.
  • I agree to pay any fines assessed to my account for failure to abide by the Library Laptop policy (on back).
  • Borrowers are expected to protect Loaner Laptops from damage and theft.
  • No food or drink should be in the vicinity of borrowed Loaner Laptops.
  • I understand that the library is not responsible for battery error that may lead to loss of my data and that in order to minimize this risk; it is recommended that work be saved often.
