In this talk, Professor Samba Gadjigo will first present a brief history of African cinema before describing the various ways in which Ousmane Sembene, subverting the official discourse of his country, examines the central issue of women in Africa today through his films. Special attention will be given to the manner in which Sembene’s Marxist ideology has influenced his original portrayal of women.

Linda Docherty, Professor of Art at Bowdoin, will be at Colby on Tuesday, October 24th to deliver this year's James M. Carpenter Lecture. Specifically, she will be discussing the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum in Boston, showing how literary and visual sources informed Gardner's public presentation of her art collections and how her idea of the museum evolved in relation to a private spiritual journey. The Gardner Museum has a particularly strong collection of pieces from the Italian Renaissance.
