JanPlan in Paris
FR 239
"Paris : Literary and Real-Time Topographies"
Paris, 2009
Director: Professor Marina Davies
E-mail: jmdavies
On-Campus Representative: Professor Adrianna Paliyenko
Office: Lovejoy 312 (Box: 4656), Tel: (207) 859-4656, Email: ampaliye
The goal of this Jan Plan is twofold: to become acquainted with French literary classics and to explore the relationship between literature and the city of Paris. How do specific Parisian places manifest themselves in famous texts and in today's cityscapes? What roles do history, architecture, and literature play in the mapping of Parisian topographies? We will answer these questions by reading the city through literature and literature through the city. As such, this course consists of traditional class sessions and walking tours – walking tours that groups of students will plan and lead with the help of the professor.
Fee
Cost of Jan Plan (based on enrollment of 15 students): $1,850
Cost of airfare to and from Boston (subject to change): $900
Total fee: $2,750
Please note the following:
* This is a zero sum budget. Should there be substantial money left in the account after the JanPlan is over, this money will be refunded in equal parts to participating students.
* This fee covers transportation to and from the Paris airport, a monthly transportation pass for the bus, subway, and tramway, and room and board in a foyer, including breakfast and your choice of lunch or dinner. The fee specifically does not cover: books and supplies, taxis, any personal travel, and one meal a day. The amount you spend in addition to the Jan Plan fee will vary depending on where you eat lunch, how much traveling you do on the weekends, etc.
January Program Schedule
January 3, 2009: Departure from Boston
January 4: Arrival in Paris
January 5: Class begins
January 10: Lunch brunch chez Madame Davies
January 16-18: Long weekend
January 28: Final paper due
January 29: Return to Boston
Classes will be held Monday-Friday morning in one of the foyer classrooms and one or two afternoons a week in the streets of Paris. Students will meet in groups and with the professor to organize the walking tours. The rest of the time, they are free to explore the city and all its cultural and entertainment offerings as they choose. However, students must also devote a good chunk of their free time each day to preparing for the next day's session, since the class requires considerable reading.
Foyer, Meals and Activities
The recently remodeled FIAP foyer has comfortable double rooms, each with two desks, two closets, and a private bathroom. It is staffed 24 hours a day. The foyer has wifi access in the common areas and Internet terminals. Students receive fresh towel and linen service and can use an on-site laundry room, for which tokens can be purchased in the lobby; therefore, there is no need to pack a month's worth of clothes.
Students receive a buffet-style Continental breakfast in the dining room reserved for long-stay residents. Board includes either lunch or dinner at the foyer, which can accomodate certain dietary restrictions, including vegetarianism.
The foyer will give us a welcome reception/soiree the night of our arrival. They also have an activities director who is available if the students wish to organize dances, plays or other entertainment and cultural activities.
Feel free to check out the FIAP's website at www.fiap.asso.fr, but remember that some of the information about dining and fees does not apply to us, because we have the special (better!) deal.
Break and Personal Travel
Included in the Jan Plan schedule is a 3-day weekend break from January 16-18. Students have the choice of staying in Paris or traveling in France or to nearby European countries. Travel to London is quick on high-speed (TGV) trains. Travel to ski stations in the Alps (in particular Chamonix - Mont Blanc) is also a possibility.
Other than this scheduled break, there are no breaks and there will be no excused absences for travel.
